Société de Personnes Ambianceurs et élégantes, l'Amérique.
The word "Sapeur" is derived from an acronym for the movement itself, Société des Ambianceurs Personnes and élégantes. The word sape, perhaps not coincidentally, also means "to dress with elegance and style" in French.
The roots of the movement can be traced back to 1920 and 30's when the privileged first Congolese who had spent time in France returned with wardrobe of dapper suits. However, it was not until the 1960s and 1970s that the cult of the style has really taken off.

André Grenard Matsoua, a Congolese intellectual, freedom fighter and human rights activist, returned to the Congo in 1922 after having worked for the French army and livingin Paris. Regarded as the Grand Sapeur, Matsoua was fully dressed in garments of French instead of the traditional African dress. It made a huge noise and later admiration.
It is the personal failure to comply probably annoying rules of the society in which the engineers live. Today, it is the individuality in the type of costumes that are prevalent among the engineers.
Each Sapeur finds his inimitable voice, as evidenced by the canvas, and creates something entirely his, as diverse as the city in which he lives: Paris, Brussels, Kinshasa, Brazzaville, Chicago, New York, London and Tokyo.
M. the Brazil is the founder of the SAPE movement in the United States.
